What’s the History of Barbecue Ribs Recipe?

Barbecue ribs are a chronicle of growth pertaining to American barbecue traditions-both rich and flavorful. It emanated from the varied cooking traditions practiced by the early native people and further modified by European settlers. Through such amalgamation, barbecue ribs have emerged as an admired Americans’ culinary mainstay.

Early beginnings: The concept of slow-cooking meat, either over an open flame or in a pit, goes way back in time and relates to many indigenous cultures along the Americas. Rib preparation, among others, is done by Native American tribes using methods that involve indirect heat and smoke.

Colonial Influence: With the coming of European settlers into the New World, they brought with them the tradition of roasting and smoking their meats. Such skills combined with those of the people from the land on preserving and preparing their foods, thus leading to the birth of early, crude styles of barbecue, especially in the South.

Barbecue ribs were a product of the 19th century. Barbecue became a cultural phenomenon in regions such as Texas and the Carolinas in the Southern states. Ribs were seasoned with local spices and slow-cooked to perfection, thus creating the tender succulent ribs that we eat today.

Modern Evolution: The concept of barbecue ribs became highly popularized and gained much attention in the 20th century as commercial barbecue restaurants started to emerge, along with competitive cook-offs. The development of regional styles ranging from sweet-and-tangy sauce, represented by Kansas City, to the dry rub method of Memphis, further diversified preparation and consumption methods for the ribs.

Cultural impact: Barbecued ribs have become more than a symbol of American food tradition, but one for gatherings, cookouts, and restaurants serving them up across the country. It has evolved into several different styles and flavors-a melting pot of history and regionalism amidst American barbecue.

Ribs Marinade

Well, our marinade is pretty basic, yet full of flavor; in essence, it only contains four major ingredients.

BBQ Sauce: In this respect, any high-quality BBQ sauce should be used for the best results. Whether you like smoky or the classic flavor, I would say with regular BBQ sauce, the ribs will have a more versatile taste.

Garlic: A pretty generous amount of garlic gives a strong kick to the ribs, thereby elevating their entire flavor profile.

Olive Oil: A little bit of olive oil within the marinade will help in getting more caramelized and crispy finishes on the ribs with barbecue sauce.

Worcestershire Sauce: While its name is hard to spell, Worcestershire sauce is extremely easy to appreciate. It adds that dimensional feel to the rest of the flavors.

Together listed, these make for a fantastically flavored marinade which makes the ribs so special.

  • 4 pounds baby back pork ribs
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper cracked
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder or cayenne powder – optional
  • 2  tablespoons olive oil

SAUCE

  • 3 tablespoons garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper optional for heat
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
  • Prepare Ribs: Remove the tough membrane from the underside (bony side) of the ribs. Place the ribs on a baking sheet or tray lined with foil or parchment paper.
  • Season Ribs: In a small bowl, mix together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, cumin, and chili or cayenne. Sprinkle the seasoning blend evenly over both sides of the ribs. Drizzle with oil and rub the seasoning into the ribs.
  • Bake Covered: Cover the tray with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours.
  • Prepare Sauce: While the ribs are baking, combine the ingredients for the sauce.
  • Add Sauce and Finish Baking: After 2 hours, remove the ribs from the oven and discard the foil. Spread the barbecue sauce mixture evenly over the tops of the ribs.
  • Increase Temperature: Raise the oven temperature to 460°F (240°C). Return the ribs to the oven, uncovered, and bake for an additional 10 minutes. For a caramelized finish, switch the oven to broil (or grill) on medium-high heat for about 3 minutes.
  • Rest and Serve: Let the ribs rest for 10 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute before slicing.

Notes

Marinating for Flavor: Allow the ribs to marinate in the mixture of barbecue sauce, best if an hour or overnight. This gives extra flavor to ribs that every meaty portion is drenched with scrumptious spices.
Dry Rub Prep: The ribs are first patted dry before going in the oven and then sprinkled with the dry rub mixture. This will create a flavorful crust on the ribs, to which a drizzle of olive oil contributes.
Baking and Broiling: Ribs are baked at low temperature to tenderize them, then finished under the broiler for that perfect char and sticky glaze. Keep a very keen eye, though, that they don’t char while broiling.
Resting Time: Once baked, rest the ribs for 10 minutes. This is the time taken to redistribute juices inside the meat so that every bite is juicy and full of flavor.
Serving Suggestions: Serve your Sticky Oven Barbecue Ribs with classic sides, such as coleslaw, French fries, or potato salad, for a complete meal that is sure to impress.
